What to Know Before You Arrive
Frankenmuth's founding story is specific and well documented: a group of conservative Lutheran immigrants from the Roßtal area of Franconia in Germany left aboard the ship Caroline on April 20, 1845, landed at Castle Garden in New York seven weeks later, and settled here. The name combines Franken (for Franconia) and Mut (courage) — Franconian courage — and the town has leaned into that German identity for generations rather than letting it fade, which is why the whole downtown reads as Bavarian rather than generic small-town Michigan.
Two things put Frankenmuth on a road-trip map disproportionate to its under-5,000 population: family-style chicken dinners and Christmas shopping. Frankenmuth's visitors bureau names Zehnder's of Frankenmuth and the Bavarian Inn Restaurant as the two spots that serve the town's chicken dinners. Zehnder's describes its dinners as family-style and dates its restaurant tradition to 1856; the Bavarian Inn Restaurant calls its dinners “all-you-care-to-eat” and says more than 20 million guests have visited since 1888. Bronner's Christmas Wonderland, founded in 1945 by Wallace “Wally” Bronner, markets itself as the World's Largest Christmas Store — that's Bronner's own claim, not an independently verified title, but the numbers back up the scale: about 2.2 acres of retail floor space, roughly 7.35 acres of total building area, on a 45-acre site with about 27 acres landscaped.
The town's physical landmark is the covered bridge over the Cass River right downtown — Zehnder's Holzbrücke, completed in 1979 using traditional covered-bridge timber-framing techniques even though it's a modern structure. It's the kind of detail that captures the whole town: genuinely built with old-world craft, genuinely a 20th-century addition, and entirely sincere about both at once.
The Road Trip Stop
Bronner's Christmas Wonderland is the anchor, and it's open essentially year-round, not just in December. Wally Bronner founded it in 1945; today the complex runs about 2.2 acres (96,000 sq ft) of retail space inside roughly 7.35 acres of total building area, on a 45-acre site with about 27 acres landscaped. Inside, more than 300 decorated Christmas trees are on display according to current company material, and outside, Christmas Lane runs about 100,000 lights every evening. The grounds also include a scale replica of the Silent Night Chapel.
Budget the time
- 90 minutes to two hours covers a real walk through Bronner's — it's large enough that rushing defeats the point.
- Both chicken-dinner restaurants take table reservations on their own sites — Zehnder's on its restaurant page, the Bavarian Inn Restaurant on its dining page.
- Walk the covered bridge downtown, a five-minute stop that anchors the town's whole Bavarian-village feel.
- Evening visits catch Christmas Lane lit up even outside the holiday season, since the roughly 100,000 lights run nightly.
Neighborhoods
Downtown / Main Street
The Bavarian-storefront core, with the covered bridge, restaurants and shops built in the town's consistent half-timbered style.
Bronner's district
The Christmas Wonderland campus on the edge of downtown — a 45-acre destination unto itself, with its own outdoor lighted grounds.
Riverside / Cass River
The river corridor running through town, with the covered bridge and walking paths along the water.
Frankenmuth Township (surrounding)
The farmland and rural roads outside the tourist core, quiet and mostly agricultural — a reminder the Bavarian downtown sits inside an ordinary Michigan farm town.
The Food Stop
The family-style chicken dinner is Frankenmuth's signature meal, served at two long-running competitors: Zehnder's and the Bavarian Inn, both known for the same all-you-can-eat format.
Beyond the chicken dinners, two businesses describe on their own sites what they make and sell: Kern's Sausages, at 110 W. Jefferson, says its family-recipe sausages are made and smoked on site and lists bakery goods among its products, and Zehnder's Marketplace, on the lower level of Zehnder's restaurant, lists freshly baked breads and pastries among its goods.

Practical Road Trip Info
Half a day covers Bronner's, the covered bridge and a chicken dinner; a full day if you're adding the brewery or the historical museum.
Frankenmuth runs busy year-round, not just at Christmas — Bronner's is open essentially every month, and the town leans into its Bavarian identity in every season. For 2026, the Frankenmuth Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau lists the Christmas season kickoff event for November 27; its Christmas pages do not say which weeks are busiest, so check the bureau's Christmas page for current events and dates.
Weekend waits at the chicken-dinner restaurants could not be confirmed: neither Zehnder's nor the Bavarian Inn Restaurant publishes wait times or a walk-in policy on the pages checked. Ask the restaurant about current seating before planning around a mealtime.
Downtown parking is free: the Frankenmuth Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau says public parking is available throughout downtown around local businesses and directly behind the Visitor Center. The bureau also lists a complimentary seasonal shuttle with free parking options, running Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 12PM to 8PM between July 31 and December 27, 2026. Its pages do not say when downtown lots fill, so check with the bureau before a holiday-season visit.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
Bronner's Christmas Wonderland
Big, bright, walkable aisles of ornaments and decorations that hold attention even for kids who don't care about Christmas yet — the scale alone is the draw.
The covered bridge
A five-minute walk-and-look stop, easy for any age, right in the middle of downtown.
A chicken dinner at Zehnder's or the Bavarian Inn
Both restaurants list a kids' menu alongside the family-style dinner: Zehnder's menus page includes a “Kid's Menu” and the Bavarian Inn Restaurant's dining page lists “Kids” among its menus. Check each restaurant's menu page for current details.
Frankenmuth Historical Museum
The museum's visit page lists guided museum tours of 30-45 minutes at $5* per adult and $1* per student; confirm current admission with the museum before visiting.
