What to Know Before You Arrive
Grand Rapids earned the nickname Furniture City the hard way — by the end of the 19th century it was established as the premier furniture-manufacturing city in the United States, and that industrial identity shaped the whole downtown. The population today is a little over 200,000, making it Michigan's second-largest city, and it sits on the Grand River, the same waterway that once powered the furniture mills.
ArtPrize is the thing that makes Grand Rapids specific rather than generic. Rick DeVos created it in 2009 with an open-access model most art competitions don't attempt: anyone over 18 can display work, any space within the three-square-mile ArtPrize district can be a venue, and — at least in the inaugural year — the winners were determined solely by public vote via mobile devices and the ArtPrize website. Later years added juried awards alongside the public vote. The event runs annually over 19 days in late September into October; the most recent ran September 18 to October 4, 2025, with the next scheduled September 17 to October 3, 2026.
Grand Rapids was also the childhood home of President Gerald Ford, who is buried with his wife Betty on the grounds of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum downtown, along the west bank of the Grand River. The museum holds roughly 20,000 artifacts from his life and career — Boy Scout materials, state gifts, campaign items, bicentennial memorabilia — and was dedicated September 18, 1981. Ford represented Michigan's 5th congressional district for nearly 25 years before becoming president, which is a large part of why the city claims him as its own.
The Road Trip Stop
ArtPrize is the anchor if your visit lines up with it — late September into early October, an open-entry art competition spread across a three-square-mile downtown district, with no selection committee deciding what gets shown. Any visitor can walk into dozens of venues — galleries, hotel lobbies, storefronts, public plazas — and vote on work alongside a jury process for a $500,000 prize pool. Outside those 19 days, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum and Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park are the year-round anchors instead.
Budget the time
- During ArtPrize (late Sept–early Oct): budget a full day just to walk a fraction of the three-square-mile district; most visitors pick a few blocks rather than trying to see everything.
- Any other time: two to three hours for the Ford Museum, and a half day for Frederik Meijer Gardens if the 158-acre grounds are part of the plan.
- Check ArtPrize's current dates at artprize.org before planning around it — ArtPrize says it is held every year in the fall, and its 2026 competition ran September 18 to October 3.
- The Ford Museum and Meijer Gardens are on opposite sides of downtown; pair one with a morning and the other with an afternoon rather than trying to rush both back to back.
Neighborhoods
Downtown
The Grand River core, with the Ford Museum, the ArtPrize district's center of gravity, and the city's main hotel and restaurant concentration.
Eastown & Wealthy Street
Two of the four business districts that Experience Grand Rapids groups as Uptown (with East Fulton and East Hills), just east of downtown. Experience GR describes Eastown as a walkable district of more than 130 businesses that began as a streetcar commuter suburb, and the Wealthy Street Business District as 14 blocks of renovated historic buildings with shops and restaurants.
Heritage Hill
A historic residential district adjacent to downtown. The American Planning Association describes its 1,300 historic properties as representing more than 60 architectural styles, and notes the neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places.
East Grand Rapids
A separate city within the Grand Rapids metropolitan area, administered autonomously. The city's parks page describes a 4.2 mile trail around Reeds Lake, and Experience Grand Rapids lists fishing, kayaking, waterskiing, hiking and biking around the lake.
The Food Stop
In 2012 Grand Rapids tied Asheville, North Carolina in being named “Beer City USA” in an online poll, according to Wikipedia. Experience Grand Rapids says its Beer City Ale Trail encompasses 35+ craft breweries, and its Uptown guide lists breweries among the businesses in Eastown and East Hills.
Experience Grand Rapids counts more than 20 dining and drinking establishments along the 14-block Wealthy Street Business District, and describes downtown as holding 200+ restaurants and shops.
25 breweries within 10 miles of Grand Rapids, 18 of them brewpubs with a kitchen.

Practical Road Trip Info
Two days covers downtown, the Ford Museum and Meijer Gardens comfortably; ArtPrize alone can absorb a full extra day if it's in season.
Seasons: Experience Grand Rapids lists Frederik Meijer Gardens as open year-round, with its sculpture-park tram available in warm-weather months; check meijergardens.org for current hours. ArtPrize is held every year in the fall, and its 2026 dates were September 18 to October 3.
Frederik Meijer Gardens and the Ford Museum both charge admission. The Ford Museum's own page lists adult admission at $17* and free parking; Experience Grand Rapids lists ticket prices for the Gardens, but we were unable to confirm the fees for the current season on the Gardens' own site, so check meijergardens.org before you go.
Downtown parking during ArtPrize: ArtPrize's 2026 visitor guide lists downtown parking lots and ramps and says downtown has ample street parking, at $1–$2.25* per hour. Its two DASH lots run $3–$5* a day, with a free DASH shuttle that the guide says arrives every 8 minutes; check the current guide for the year you visit.

The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
Frederik Meijer Gardens
158 acres to walk, a tropical conservatory full of exotic plants, and giant sculptures kids can actually see the scale of. A genuinely all-ages outdoor stop.
Grand Rapids Public Museum
The museum's carousel page describes the 1928 Spillman Carousel, housed in the Cook Carousel Pavilion, as a family favorite. Carousel tickets are $3* per person, and the museum says the carousel closes monthly for routine maintenance, so check its calendar before planning around a ride.
ArtPrize (in season)
ArtPrize says viewing entries is free and open to the public, with venues spread across five districts. Its FAQ says anyone 13 years or older and present at the event can vote.
Ford Museum
History-forward rather than hands-on, but the scale of a real presidential collection lands with kids old enough for a museum pace.
