Wisconsin's Legislature created the Rustic Roads program in 1973 to preserve scenic, lightly traveled country roads, which are marked with brown and yellow signs and numbered with an R prefix, such as R-50. A Rustic Road may be dirt, gravel or paved, and its maximum speed limit is set by law at 45 mph.
