What to Know Before You Arrive
General Moses Cleaveland laid the town out in 1796 near the mouth of the Cuyahoga River as part of Connecticut's Western Reserve, and the river and lake shore turned it into a major commercial and industrial city, ranking among the ten largest in the country for much of the 20th century. Known today as “The Forest City” among several other nicknames, Cleveland is the second-most populous city in Ohio and anchors a metro area of more than two million people.
That industrial growth had a cost the city doesn't hide: the Cuyahoga River, choked by decades of pollution, caught fire at least a dozen times over the years, and the June 22, 1969 fire made national news and helped spur the American environmental movement, contributing to the passage of the Clean Water Act. The river is healthy enough today to fish and kayak, which locals will point out is exactly the point of the story.
Cleveland's cultural institutions grew up alongside the industry: the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and eventually the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which the city won in the 1980s over Memphis, Cincinnati and New York by combining a $65 million funding pledge with its own claim to rock and roll history through Alan Freed and radio station WMMS. The Hall was dedicated in 1995 on North Coast Harbor, a few blocks from Progressive Field and the Browns' stadium — the same downtown waterfront strip that also holds the Great Lakes Science Center.
The Road Trip Stop
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame sits right on Lake Erie in a glass pyramid designed by I. M. Pei, dedicated September 1, 1995. Cleveland's pitch to host it leaned on Alan Freed's Moondog Coronation Ball, often called the first major rock and roll concert, plus a $65 million public funding pledge that out-argued Memphis and New York for the honor. Inside, the collection runs from stage costumes to handwritten lyrics across several floors overlooking the harbor.
Budget the time
- Give it two to three hours, more if you want to watch the theater films in full; the exhibits span multiple floors and it's easy to lose track of time.
- General admission is $45* for adults, $40* for locals and students, and $30* for ages 6–12, with ages 5 and under free.
- Check the day's hours before you go — the museum runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. most days, later on Thursdays and in summer, with holiday closures.
- Walk next door to the Great Lakes Science Center afterward if the group wants a second stop on the same stretch of harbor without moving the car.

Tremont
A hilltop neighborhood of Victorian houses and restaurants across the river from downtown, best known outside Cleveland for the house used in the film A Christmas Story, now a museum.
Downtown & Playhouse Square
The office towers and stadium district downtown, anchored by Playhouse Square, restored in the 1970s into what is now the largest performing arts center in the country outside New York City.
University Circle
A dense cluster of museums and institutions a few miles east of downtown, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Severance Hall and Case Western Reserve University, next door to the Little Italy neighborhood and its 1908 Holy Rosary Church.
The Food Stop
Slyman's Restaurant, on St. Clair Avenue since long before downtown's newer restaurants arrived, serves what it calls the biggest corned beef sandwich in Cleveland — breakfast and lunch only, closed weekends.
Great Lakes Brewing Company's brewpub in Ohio City pours Ohio's original craft beer inside a building with a bar dating to the 1860s, a short walk from the West Side Market.

Practical Road Trip Info
One full day covers Playhouse Square, the Rock Hall and a walk through downtown; add a second day if Ohio City, Tremont and University Circle are all on the list.
Winters are cold and snowy. The National Weather Service’s monthly normals for Cleveland list a January mean high of 35.8 and mean low of 22.3 degrees Fahrenheit, a July mean high of 83.7, and 63.8 inches of snow in a normal year, 18.4 of them in January. The Weather Service calls lake effect snow common across the Great Lakes region in late fall and winter, and its Cleveland office describes a primary snowbelt east of Cleveland.
West Side Market is closed Tuesdays and Thursdays, so build your Ohio City visit around its Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday hours.
Parking near the Rock Hall includes paid meters, lots and a garage. The Rock Hall’s visit page lists paid meters and parking lots around the museum and says it does not validate parking; the Great Lakes Science Center’s site describes an attached 500-car garage that is closed to the public for home Browns games. That site places the Science Center between the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Huntington Bank Field, and Progressive Field is about 1 mile south-east of the Rock Hall in a straight line.
One public campground within 25 miles of Cleveland, and it takes reservations. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
Great Lakes Science Center
Hands-on exhibits and an OMNIMAX theater right next to the Rock Hall on the harbor, an easy pairing for kids who've had enough of guitars and gold records.
A Christmas Story House
A short, story-driven museum stop that works even for kids who've only seen clips of the movie.
West Side Market
A walkable indoor market with enough smells and samples to hold a child's attention longer than a regular grocery run.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
Interactive listening stations and instruments-you-can-touch exhibits make this less of a sit-still museum than it sounds.
