What to Know Before You Arrive
The falls formed roughly 10,000–12,000 years ago when retreating glacial meltwater carved through the Niagara Escarpment, and they’re really three separate waterfalls: American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, both entirely on the New York side, and the larger Horseshoe Falls, which straddles the international border. The layered rock — hard dolomite over softer shale — is why the falls keep slowly eating their way upstream instead of holding still.
This matters for planning: Niagara Parks places Queen Victoria Park on the Canadian side opposite both the American and Canadian Horseshoe Falls, while the Niagara Falls State Park website places Terrapin Point on Goat Island directly above the Horseshoe Falls on the American side. Crossing the Rainbow Bridge into Ontario means carrying identification: the Canada Border Services Agency recommends a valid passport and also accepts other documents showing full name, date of birth and citizenship, and returning to the United States by land requires a WHTI-compliant document such as a passport, passport card or enhanced driver’s license. The American side still has the park, the gorge trails, and both American and Bridal Veil Falls up close — a full trip on its own.
Niagara Falls the city grew up around hydroelectric power, not just tourism: George Westinghouse’s company, licensing Nikola Tesla’s AC patents, won the bid to build the first major AC power plant here in the 1890s, and manufacturing followed the cheap electricity. The city peaked around 102,000 residents in 1960 and has lost more than half its population since as that manufacturing base left.
The Road Trip Stop
Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest continuously operating state park in the country, established in 1885 after Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux campaigned for decades to keep the land around the falls public rather than fenced off by private tourist traps. Olmsted and Vaux finished their design for it in 1887, and the 400-plus-acre reservation still frames every classic view of the American side.
Budget the time
- Half a day covers the park itself, including Prospect Point, Goat Island and a walk out toward Terrapin Point for the Horseshoe Falls view.
- Maid of the Mist tickets are not timed; the company says all passengers, including online ticket holders, board on a first-come, first-served basis, with tours scheduled to depart every 15 minutes, and its boat tours have run since 1846. We were unable to confirm when lines are longest.
- Bring a poncho or expect to buy one — you will get wet at Terrapin Point and anywhere near Cave of the Winds, rain or shine.
- Crossing to the Canadian side for the Horseshoe Falls view takes a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card to return to the U.S.; the Rainbow Bridge car toll is $6*.

Neighborhoods
Downtown / Old Falls Street
The walkable tourist core between the park and the hotels, pedestrianized and rebuilt around the Cataract Commons development to give the falls a proper front door.
Prospect Point
The northern tip of the state park itself, closest to American Falls, with the observation tower and elevator down to the Maid of the Mist dock.
DeVeaux
A quieter residential pocket south of downtown, named for the 19th-century college that once stood there, now mostly houses and small streets away from the tourist strip.
Niagara University area
The northern edge of the city near the university and the river, with a slower pace than downtown and easy access up toward Lewiston.
The Food Stop
DiCamillo Bakery opened its first bakery in Niagara Falls in 1920, and its own website says its handmade Scaletta breads have filled its ovens every day for over 100 years. The bakery’s own history says the family began by baking bread in basement ovens and delivering it to neighbors in horse-drawn wagons.
For a sit-down meal, Fortuna’s describes itself on its own website as a fixture of Niagara Falls since 1945 and says the third generation of the Fortuna family now runs the restaurant.

Practical Road Trip Info
Budget one full day for the American side alone, two if you’re also crossing into Ontario for the Horseshoe Falls view.
Seasons differ by attraction: the park website says Niagara Falls State Park is open 365 days a year and Cave of the Winds is open year-round, with posted hours that shorten from late October, while the Maid of the Mist posts a 2026 season from April 24 through November 8 and is closed from November 9 until opening day 2027.
Canada recommends U.S. citizens cross with a valid passport; the Canada Border Services Agency also accepts other documents showing full name, date of birth and citizenship, while the state park’s FAQ says U.S. citizens are required to show a passport at the border crossing. Returning to the United States by land requires a WHTI-compliant document, and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission posts real-time traffic conditions for the crossings.
The state park’s four parking lots tend to fill up early on weekends (including Friday) and holidays, according to the park’s parking page, which says lot 1 at Prospect Point is the closest to the Welcome Center and Maid of the Mist and that several city lots sit just footsteps from the park.
Niagara Falls has no major-league team of its own; the nearest are Buffalo's Bills and Sabres.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
Maid of the Mist
A boat ride straight toward the base of the falls, ponchos included, that’s been the classic first-timer move since long before anyone in the family was born.
Cave of the Winds
Wooden boardwalks that put kids close enough to Bridal Veil Falls to get soaked on purpose, which is usually the point.
Aquarium of Niagara
Sea lions, penguins and a Great Lakes exhibit hall, an easy indoor break if the weather by the falls turns.
Old Fort Niagara
A real fort with cannons and costumed history programs, an easy add if the day trip north is on the schedule.
