What to Know Before You Arrive
Wilmington is the largest city in Delaware, with a 2020 population of 70,898, and it's the county seat of New Castle County. The city's industrial identity starts with one family: Éleuthère Irénée du Pont, a French Huguenot who emigrated to the U.S. in 1800, had founded black powder mills on the Brandywine River just outside Wilmington by 1802. The company grew into a major supplier to the U.S. military and eventually one of the largest industrial names in American history.
The original mill site is preserved today as the Hagley Museum and Library, covering more than 235 acres along Brandywine Creek. It includes the powder yards, a 19th-century machine shop, and Eleutherian Mills — the Georgian-style mansion that housed five generations of the du Pont family, the first du Pont residence in the United States. The powder mills themselves closed in 1921 and the property was gradually sold off; the museum opened as a nonprofit educational institution in 1957. It's genuinely rare, industrial history you can walk through rather than read about — the kind of thing that doesn't survive in most American cities that built fortunes on 19th-century manufacturing.
Downtown, the Riverfront district tells a newer story: formerly a hub for manufacturing and shipbuilding, it went through a rapid series of state-sponsored urban renewal and gentrification projects starting in the late 1990s and is now a walkable mix of restaurants, offices and public riverside space. The Delaware Art Museum, meanwhile, holds one of the country's most specific art collections — American illustration and the English Pre-Raphaelite movement, built around a Samuel and Mary R. Bancroft donation that's the largest Pre-Raphaelite collection in the United States.
The Road Trip Stop
The Hagley Museum and Library is the anchor. It's the actual site where Éleuthère Irénée du Pont founded black powder mills in 1802, and the 235-acre property still holds the powder yards, a 19th-century machine shop, and Eleutherian Mills — the Georgian mansion that housed five generations of the du Pont family. The mills grew into the largest black powder factory in the world before closing in 1921; the site became a museum in 1957 and today walks visitors through both the industrial history and the family's domestic life on the same ground.
Budget the time
- Two to three hours covers the powder yards, the machine shop and Eleutherian Mills at an unhurried pace; the site is large enough to genuinely fill a morning or afternoon.
- Expect a mix of self-guided and guided visits — Hagley lists self-guided tours for the powder yard and a guided tour of the Eleutherian Mills residence that is included with admission, with tours offered throughout the day.
- Pair it with the Delaware Art Museum, a short drive away, for a two-museum Wilmington day.
- Comfortable walking shoes matter here; the grounds are large and mostly outdoors between buildings.

*Check before you go. Every lake here links to the official page we checked it against. Each state a price we read off that page on the date we checked. Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.

Practical Road Trip Info
One full day covers the Hagley Museum and the Delaware Art Museum; add a half day for the Riverfront if you want a slower dinner-and-walk evening.
Weather matters at Hagley: the museum describes itself as a large, indoor-outdoor museum covering 235 acres, and its visitor FAQ calls it largely an outdoor experience with uneven terrain. The museum is open six days a week and closed on Wednesdays.
Both museums charge admission. Hagley is $22* for adults and opens 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Wednesdays; the Delaware Art Museum is $18* for adults, open Wednesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and free on Thursday evenings from 4 to 8 p.m., April through December.
Riverfront and downtown parking varies by area: Visit Wilmington says metered parking downtown is free after 6 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends, and the Riverfront site lists a commuter lot with complimentary day parking from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. plus metered and hourly spaces on Justison and South Madison streets. Check both sites for current rules before planning an evening downtown.
