What to Know Before You Arrive
Dover is the capital and second-most-populous city in Delaware, after Wilmington, with a 2024 population estimate of 40,191. The First State nickname isn't marketing — Delaware really was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, and Dover has been the seat of that government for the whole history since. The Green, the city's historic central square, still hosts the Delaware Supreme Court and the Kent County Courthouse, which means Dover's colonial-era downtown is still doing colonial-era work.
Dover Air Force Base sits inside the city's southeast limits and houses two airlift wings — a genuinely large military presence for a city this size. On the base grounds, the Air Mobility Command Museum grew out of a 1986 historical center and became the Air Mobility Command Museum in 1997; it now displays vintage aircraft from World War II through the modern era, including a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress and a Lockheed C-5A Galaxy, plus a flight simulator and the retired 1956–2009 control tower cab.
The other Dover institution is Dover Motor Speedway — the Monster Mile, a one-mile concrete NASCAR oval that broke ground in October 1967 and opened March 8, 1969. It runs on concrete rather than asphalt, a surface change made in 1995 that's part of why drivers still talk about it differently than other tracks; permanent seating runs to 54,000, and NASCAR Cup Series races here draw crowds that dwarf Dover's own population.
The Road Trip Stop
The Green is the anchor for Dover's colonial history — the historic square that still hosts the Delaware Supreme Court and the Kent County Courthouse, surrounded by the kind of preserved 18th-century architecture that makes clear this has been the seat of Delaware government since statehood. If a race weekend lines up with your trip, the Monster Mile becomes the obvious second anchor: a concrete mile oval that's hosted NASCAR since 1969, with a nickname drivers use without irony.
Budget the time
- The Green and its historic buildings can be covered on foot; the National Park Service says First State Heritage Park offers limited 45-minute guided walking tours of historic downtown Dover on Thursday through Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and the state says Old State House tours last no more than forty-five minutes.
- Race weekends need a full day and advance tickets — the Monster Mile pulls in roughly 65,000 people and the town fills up around it.
- The Air Mobility Command Museum is on base and free; budget 90 minutes to two hours for the aircraft collection and the flight simulator.
- The museum has its own entrance off Route 9 (exit 91 on US 113/DE 1) — the museum says it cannot be visited through Dover Air Force Base.
Neighborhoods
The Green & downtown
Dover's colonial-era square and the historic government district around it — courthouses, the State House, and preserved 18th-century storefronts.
Dover Air Force Base area
The southeast side of the city, home to the base itself and the Air Mobility Command Museum on its grounds.
Speedway district
North of downtown on North Dupont Highway, where Dover Motor Speedway sits; quiet most of the year, packed on race weekends.

Home to Delaware's only historically Black university, a land-grant institution with its own campus identity north of downtown.
The Food Stop
We were unable to confirm which restaurants are currently open in downtown Dover around The Green.
On race weekends, food centers on the speedway grounds: the speedway lists concession stands around the track and says fans may bring their own food and drink into the grandstands.

*Check before you go. Every lake here links to the official page we checked it against. Each states a price we read off that page on the date we checked. Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.

This is a list of what is near you, not a recommendation of any of it. None of these carry an accreditation we were able to confirm, which is not the same as none being accredited — we check against one register, and plenty of good municipal, state and university places are in no register at all. One entry is marked with an asterisk: we could not confirm part of what is listed, and the note under it says which part. Opening times, prices and seasons change without notice, so check the operator’s own site — every name above links to it.
Practical Road Trip Info
Half a day covers The Green and downtown; a full day if you're adding the Air Mobility Command Museum. Race weekends are their own full-day-or-more commitment.
Seasonal timing: the speedway lists its 2027 NASCAR weekend with the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race on Saturday, May 15, and the Cup Series race on Sunday, May 16; the Air Mobility Command Museum's Open Cockpit Day runs every third Saturday of the month from April through October, and the museum says its aircraft are closed when the outside temperature exceeds 90°F.
Both the Air Mobility Command Museum and the Old State House are free; the State House is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with guided tours at 10, 11, 1, 2 and 3.
We were unable to confirm how far in advance hotels fill for Monster Mile race weekends. The speedway lists event camping, with check-in as early as Wednesday of race week in most lots, and race weekend travel packages that include hotel accommodations through On Location.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
Air Mobility Command Museum
Free admission, aircraft exhibits and flight simulators; the museum says its flight simulators are free for ages 10 and up, and that Open Cockpit Day gives the public full access to many of its aircraft from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. if weather permits and tour guides are available.
A walk around The Green
Short, outdoor, and historic enough to make a good five-minute history lesson for kids without demanding a full museum's attention span.
A Monster Mile race day
The speedway's FAQ lists youth ticket pricing for ages 12 and under: free grandstand admission with a ticketed adult on Saturday (NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race) and tickets from $10* on Sunday (NASCAR Cup Series race).
John Dickinson Plantation
A historic site south of Dover: the state lists admission as free (donations accepted), Tuesday as outdoor visitation only, and guided mansion tours Thursday through Saturday; the National Park Service says the visit begins at the visitor center with a short film.
