Lincoln

The city is called Lincoln because a senator trying to sabotage it proposed the name, expecting his colleagues to find it unacceptable. They voted for it anyway.

What to Know Before You Arrive

Lincoln was founded as Lancaster in 1856 and took its present name as part of the fight over moving the capital from Omaha. The name was introduced by an opponent of the move rather than a supporter of it, which is an unusual origin for a city named after a president.

The capitol is the building to come for. Designed by Bertram G. Goodhue and completed in 1932, it rises as a 400-foot domed tower from a low, wide base, a form the capitol's own history page describes as a radical departure from the prototypical form of the national Capitol. It is visible from the interstate and from most of the city.

There is a significant caveat for the moment. The capitol's own visitor page states that “the tower and observation decks will be closed due to HVAC construction.” For a building whose main draw is its height, that removes the view. The tours themselves continue and remain free.

03

The Road Trip Stop

The Nebraska State Capitol is the anchor, and “free guided tours begin at the North Entrance on Second Floor.” It is the second-tallest capitol in the country, finished in 1932 to Bertram Goodhue's design.

Check the tower before you build the day around the view

  • The tower and observation decks are closed for HVAC works. The capitol's visit page, read on 14 October 2026, still states that “the tower and observation decks will be closed due to HVAC construction,” and its current-projects page says the 14th-floor observation decks and Memorial Chamber close during the tower phase of the project. Its separate building-hours page still describes the 14th-floor decks as open “as weather conditions permit,” so the capitol's own pages do not agree. If the view from the top is why you are stopping, call the tour office to confirm the current position before travelling.
  • Tours are free and run on a fixed timetable. 9:00 a.m. Monday to Friday; 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. Monday to Saturday; and 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. every day including Sunday. The afternoon slots are the only ones that run seven days.
  • The building's hours differ by day. Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturdays and holidays 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Sundays 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. It closes on Thanksgiving Day, the Friday after it, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
  • The tour office number is (402) 471-0448 if you want to confirm the tower status or arrange a group.

Neighborhoods

The Capitol district
South of downtown, where the tower rises from an otherwise low skyline.

The Haymarket
A warehouse district east of the old rail yards, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014 as the Lincoln Haymarket Historic District. The American Planning Association's 2009 profile describes a compact neighbourhood, easily covered on foot and adjacent to the traditional downtown, with restaurants in converted warehouses, shops and galleries.

The University of Nebraska campus
The university's original campus was laid out in the north-east corner of the planned downtown, and Memorial Stadium is on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln campus.

The Antelope Valley
Along the east edge of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's City Campus, where the Antelope Valley project, completed by 2012, built a flood-control channel for Antelope Creek with a six-lane parkway and trails alongside it.

Hidden Gems

▣

The capitol's interior decoration

Goodhue's building carries an extensive programme of mosaic, carving and inscription that is accessible on the free tour even with the tower shut.

▣

The International Quilt Museum

At the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's East Campus, a museum that describes itself as holding the world's largest publicly held quilt collection, dating from the 1600s to the present and representing 69 countries.

▣

The Sunken Gardens

A city garden at 2601 D Street with a new floral scheme designed every year and free admission. The City of Lincoln lists more than 30,000 annuals, and the 2026 theme, “A Patchwork Garden,” was inspired by a visit to the International Quilt Museum.

▣

The Nebraska unicameral

Nebraska's legislature has a single chamber, the unicameral, and it meets in this building. The capitol's own pages state that Nebraska had a two-house legislature until 1937, when the unicameral was formed, and that the west chamber was chosen to house it because it was the larger of the two chambers. The east chamber, renamed the Warner Legislative Chamber, is described on the capitol's building-rooms pages. We were unable to confirm whether the free guided tour enters it; the tour office, (402) 471-0448, can say.

07

The Food Stop

The Haymarket district, a former warehouse district east of the old rail yards, has restaurants on the ground floors of converted warehouses, according to the American Planning Association's 2009 profile. The runza is a yeast-dough bread pocket with a filling of ground beef, cabbage or sauerkraut, onions and seasonings, and Wikipedia lists Nebraska as its region. The Runza restaurant chain says it was founded in Lincoln in 1949 and lists more than 90 locations in Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado, Kansas and South Dakota. We were unable to confirm a specific independent Lincoln restaurant for this guide, and this guide does not name a business without checking that business's own site.

Memorial Stadium · university campus

On a home football Saturday, Nebraska Today, the university's news service, says the stadium holds enough people to form a city that would rank third in the state, and Visit Nebraska lists its capacity as beyond 85,000. The City of Lincoln states that its transportation department, the city and university police, the state transportation department and the State Patrol coordinate game-day traffic, including planned lane and ramp closures, and advises visitors to allow an additional 30 minutes to an hour of travel time. We were unable to confirm how lodging availability changes on game dates.

Practical Road Trip Info

Confirm the tower closure before you go. The observation decks are shut for HVAC works, which removes the capitol's best-known feature.

Sunday is afternoons only. The building opens at 1:00 p.m. on Sundays, and only the afternoon tours run that day.

I-80 passes the north of the city, so the capitol is a short detour from the main east–west route across the state.

Check for a home football Saturday. The City of Lincoln publishes a game-day traffic notice each season that includes planned lane and ramp closures, and advises allowing an additional 30 minutes to an hour of travel time; the Nebraska football schedule on huskers.com lists the home games. We were unable to confirm how lodging availability changes on game dates.
