Kearney

The town's name is a spelling mistake, and its main attraction is a museum built across the top of Interstate 80 that you drive underneath on the way in.

What to Know Before You Arrive

The city was incorporated on 3 December 1873, taking its name, extra letter and all, from the fort. It sits on the Platte, which is the reason anything is here: the Great Platte River Road along this valley was shared by the Oregon, California and Mormon trails, then the Pony Express, then the transcontinental railroad, then the Lincoln Highway, and now Interstate 80. The National Park Service says the Oregon, California, Mormon Pioneer and Pony Express trails come together near Kearney and follow the Platte west from there.

That history is why the town's main attraction is built where it is. The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument spans Interstate 80 and “contains exhibits that trace the history of the Great Platte River Road from the Oregon Trail days to the present.” You pass underneath it before you park and go up into it.

There is also a seasonal event here: Audubon's Rowe Sanctuary says that every March and April over a million sandhill cranes converge on the Platte River valley in central Nebraska to fuel up before continuing north to their nesting grounds. The sanctuary says the cranes typically begin arriving around Valentine's Day and leave around Tax Day, with crane viewing typically in March and early April. Rowe Sanctuary is at Gibbon, which the sanctuary places approximately 20 miles east of Kearney via Interstate 80; viewing from its blinds requires registration, and registration for the 2027 season opens on 7 January 2027 at 9 a.m. Central.

The Road Trip Stop

The Archway at 3060 E 1st Street is the anchor, and its own description is accurate: “Spanning proudly over I-80 at Exit 275 in Kearney, NE, the Archway stands as a powerful monument.” It presents itself as “an immersive 180 year self-guided journey for the whole family.”

Open all year, and the last tour is early

  • Open year-round except five closure days: Monday to Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday noon to 5:00 p.m. The ticket page lists closures on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Easter. For an interstate attraction that is a usefully wide window.
  • The final tour begins at 4:30 p.m. Because the visit is a timed self-guided route rather than open galleries, arriving at a quarter to five is arriving too late.
  • Admission is listed on the Archway's ticket page. Adults 13 and up are $15*, seniors 62 and up $13*, military $12* and ages 6 to 12 $7*, each plus tax; ages 5 and under are free. The page says one admission ticket is valid for any time and that parking is free.
  • Note the exit number discrepancy. The Archway's own site gives I-80 Exit 275; the city's reference entry places the structure at mile marker 274. Follow the signs rather than the number.

Hidden Gems

▣

Fort Kearny State Historical Park

The site of the 1848 post the city is named after, south-east of town. Nebraska Game and Parks lists the park as open 8 a.m. to sunset year round, with reconstructed buildings that include the stockade, parade grounds, powder magazine and blacksmith/carpenter shop. Its interpretive center is listed as open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from 1 May to 5 October and by appointment from 6 October to 2 March, with different hours in March and April; a park entry permit is required. The page does not say whether each reconstructed building can be entered, so check with the park for that.

▣

The crane viewing blinds

Rowe Sanctuary and the Crane Trust both run guided viewing from blinds on the Platte during the spring migration, and both require advance booking: Rowe says blind viewing requires registration, and the Crane Trust offers its blind tours in the early morning, while the cranes roost on the river, and in the evening, when they return. Rowe lists its 2027 guided crane experiences from 3 March to 6 April. The Crane Trust lists its blind tours at those two times of day, so they are not drop-in visits.

▣

The Museum of Nebraska Art

At 2401 Central Avenue, holding what the museum says the Nebraska Legislature recognized in 1979 as the official collection of the state. The museum lists its hours as Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5:00 p.m., closed Mondays and major holidays, with free general admission. It occupies the building that served as the Kearney post office from 1911, bought and renovated in 1986 and opened in its renovated and enlarged form in 1993.

▣

Driving under your own destination

Passing beneath the Archway on I-80 before taking the exit to go up into it is a genuinely unusual sequence for a museum visit.

The Food Stop

Kearney's eating splits between the interstate interchange, where the chains cluster around the Archway, and the downtown blocks, where the independent places are. We were unable to confirm a specific Kearney restaurant for this guide, and this guide does not name a business without checking that business's own site. One practical note: the Archway's last tour starts at 4:30 p.m., so eating afterwards rather than before is the sensible order.

2 breweries within 10 miles of Kearney, one of them a brewpub with a kitchen.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney says its athletics program is a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and competes at the NCAA Division II level; its sponsored sports include football, volleyball, wrestling, softball, and men's and women's basketball and track and field.

No MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL or MLS team plays in Kearney, and at 33,790 people the city has no professional side.

Practical Road Trip Info

It is directly on I-80, which makes this one of the least costly stops on the whole route — the Archway is at the exit rather than miles from it.

Arrive before 4:30 p.m. The final tour starts then on the days the Archway is open; its ticket page lists closures on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Easter.

March is crane season, and Kearney is busy. Audubon's Rowe Sanctuary says Kearney can be a very busy community during March and advises reserving lodging as soon as possible. If the cranes are the reason for the trip, the Crane Trust lists its blind tours for the early morning and the evening, so plan around those times.

Open Sundays, but from noon. A Sunday morning arrival means waiting.

The cranes at dawn

In March, Audubon's Rowe Sanctuary says over a million sandhill cranes are in the Platte River valley. The Crane Trust lists daytime driving tours for ages 6 and up and blind and footbridge tours for ages 10 and up, while its rules list a minimum age of 12, with an adult, for guided and footbridge tours, so confirm the age limit for the tour you want. Blind viewing at Rowe requires registration and the Crane Trust books its tours ahead.
