What to Know Before You Arrive

Estes Park is a town of fewer than six thousand people that handles the traffic of a national park gateway, and it has been solving that problem since before the park existed. F.O. Stanley is the reason. He made the town his home in the early 1900s, built the hotel that still sits above it, and used his own steam cars to open the route in — three touring Stanley Steamers on the first auto stage line in 1907, steam buses on the Lyons road in 1908. A visitor arriving today on US-34 is retracing a transport system that a hotel owner built because he had to.

The park is the reason almost everyone comes, and since 2021 it has not been a place you simply drive into. Rocky Mountain National Park runs a timed entry permit system in season, booked only through Recreation.gov. In 2026 that meant two separate permits: plain Timed Entry, covering everything except the Bear Lake Road Corridor, required from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. daily between May 22 and October 12; and Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road, which covers the corridor and everything else, required from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily between May 22 and October 18. The dates move every year. The reservation itself carries only a non-refundable $2* processing charge, and it does not replace the park entrance pass, which is still required.

The other thing that governs the town is the wapiti. Elk move through Estes Park on their migrations to and from the park in spring and autumn, along streets and across lawns rather than at a distance. In autumn the bulls bugle through the valley, which is the single most reliable reason to visit in late September rather than July, and the single most reliable reason the traffic stops.

The Road Trip Stop

Rocky Mountain National Park is the anchor, and the planning it needs is unusual for a drive-up park: the reservation comes first and the drive comes second. Inside it, Trail Ridge Road is the road-trip object — it reaches a high point of 12,183 feet, and eleven miles of it run above the treeline. It is a designated All American Road.

Book first, then drive

  • Reserve on Recreation.gov before you leave. Timed entry reservations can only be made there — by website, app or on 877-444-6777 — and are not sold at entrance stations or visitor centres. Arriving without one during permit hours is the mistake that ends a day.
  • Work out which permit you need. Bear Lake Road has its own, with a longer daily window than the rest of the park; the plain permit explicitly excludes that corridor. The two are not interchangeable, and Bear Lake is where most first-time visitors are heading.
  • Outside the permit hours the park is open. In 2026 the plain window ran 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and the Bear Lake window 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. An early start before the window opens is a legitimate way in, and it is also when the animals are moving.
  • Trail Ridge Road is seasonal and weather-governed. The park publishes a recorded road status line on (970) 586-1222. There are no fixed opening and closing dates to look up: the Park Service records the road as connecting Grand Lake and Estes Park “during the summer season”, open around the clock once open, with temporary closures possible at any time. The entrance pass is separate from the timed-entry reservation and comes in one-day and seven-day versions — $30* or $35* a vehicle, $25* or $30* a motorcycle, $15* or $20* a head on foot or by bicycle. Visitors who are not US residents pay a $100* nonresident fee on top, from age 16, unless they hold an annual or America the Beautiful pass.

*Fees subject to change, please check nps.gov for updated information.

Neighborhoods

Elkhorn Avenue
Estes Park's main street, with the Fall River and the Big Thompson River running behind it along the Riverwalk, where Visit Estes Park lists shops, restaurants and bars. On a summer afternoon this is where the gateway traffic ends up.

The Stanley's hill
Wonderview Avenue climbs to the white hotel above town, which is visible from most of the valley floor and gives the best overview of how small the town actually is.

Lake Estes and the river walk
East of downtown, with a 3.75-mile loop path round Lake Estes that Visit Estes Park lists as easy, mostly flat and paved.

The park gateways
Two entrance stations on the park's east side serve the town — Beaver Meadows on US-36 and Fall River on US-34 — and the National Park Service describes Beaver Meadows as the entrance closest to Estes Park.

Hidden Gems

▣

The Stanley Hotel's history tours

The hotel at 333 E Wonderview Avenue runs daily history and ghost tours. Its About page credits a stay by Stephen King as the inspiration for his horror novel, describing it as “a nightmare so vivid it inspired Stephen King's cult horror novel” without naming the book there. King's own site dates the stay to late September 1974 and gives the book as The Shining, and his account of the stay does not name a room. The hotel's own room page names Room 217 as the room where King gained the inspiration for writing The Shining, which makes the room the hotel's claim rather than King's.

▣

Estes Park Museum

The town's own museum at 200 4th Street, which the Town says is open year-round, Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with free admission. Its exhibits include an authentic 1909 Model EX Stanley Steamer Runabout, and the Historic Boyd Building, one of the historic structures outside the gallery, served as the first headquarters of Rocky Mountain National Park in downtown Estes Park from 1915 to 1923.

▣

Lily Lake

A lake south of town on CO-7, with a flat loop around it and views toward Twin Sisters Peak — inside the park boundary. A permit does apply here: the park lists Lily Lake among its outlying areas, where a timed entry reservation is required during the permit hours and the printed confirmation is displayed on the dashboard, and an entrance pass is required there at every hour.

▣

The Peak to Peak Highway

The Peak to Peak Scenic and Historic Byway is a 55-mile Colorado byway, established in 1918, that runs between Black Hawk and Estes Park by way of Nederland, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Colorado Tourism Office. For the Estes Park end, the National Park Service's directions give the route from Nederland as State Highway 72 to State Highway 7.

07

The Food Stop

Ed's Cantina & Grill at 390 East Elkhorn Avenue has been locally owned and operated since the 1980s, serving a Mexican menu in the middle of downtown, with a seasonal river-view patio behind it. It runs 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. seven days a week, which in a gateway town is worth knowing — a lot of Estes Park keeps shorter or seasonal hours, and a late arrival off Trail Ridge Road does not leave many options. The telephone number is (970) 586-2919.

08

The Home Teams

No MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL or MLS team plays anywhere near Estes Park, and at fewer than six thousand residents the town has no minor-league or college side either. The Denver area has a club in each of those leagues: the Rockies, Broncos, Nuggets, Avalanche and Rapids. The National Park Service's directions give the distance from Denver to Estes Park as 66 miles by way of Boulder and US-36.

Day Trips

DestinationTimeDistanceHow we got it
Trail Ridge Road to Grand Lake1 hr 35 min47 mirouted
The full traverse of the park, over the 12,183-foot high point and down the western side, eleven miles of it above the treeline. It is a crossing rather than an out-and-back, and it is only open in the warm months.
Bear Lake Road16 min7 mirouted
The corridor with its own permit and its own daily window, leading to the trailheads most first-time visitors are aiming for. The park requires a Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road reservation to enter the corridor between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily from 22 May to mid-October 2026, booked through Recreation.gov. A park shuttle has run the corridor in season, but we were unable to confirm this year’s dates or fares; check the park’s transportation page before relying on it.
Boulderguide1 hr38 mirouted
South-east by road, either on US-36 through Lyons or on the longer Peak to Peak route through Nederland, which Visit Boulder gives as about an hour and a half from Boulder. Visit Boulder's own suggestion is the Peak to Peak byway one way and the shorter US-36 the other, which makes a loop rather than a there-and-back.
Grand Lake1 hr 35 min49 mirouted
On the far side of Trail Ridge, the Town of Grand Lake describes itself as the western gateway to the park, with fewer than 500 full-time residents, on the shore of what it calls the largest natural body of water in Colorado. Only reachable directly when the high road is open.
Lyons35 min21 mirouted
The town at the bottom of the canyon where the Stanley steam buses used to start, still the usual approach from the Front Range. It is a short stop rather than a day, and it marks the point where the climb begins.

Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.

Practical Road Trip Info

The reservation is the plan. In a normal park, you decide when to arrive; here the permit decides for you, and it is booked weeks ahead in high summer. Build the day around the window you managed to get.

The town sits at 7,743 feet and the park road goes above 12,000. That is a 4,500-foot gain in an afternoon, and it affects people who felt fine in Denver.

Seasonality is severe. The high road closes for much of the year, the elk come through in spring and autumn, and a good deal of the town's business runs on the park's calendar rather than the town's.

Estes Park is not near an interstate. I-25 is about forty miles east and the approach is by canyon road, so arrival times are longer than the mileage suggests and far longer behind summer traffic.

9 public campgrounds within 25 miles of Estes Park, 3 of them bookable ahead. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.

The Local Debate

15

Family-Friendly

▣

Elk on the lawns in autumn

In spring and autumn the wapiti move through the town itself rather than staying in the park, so children can see them from a pavement. Keep well back: these are wild animals in rut, not a petting zoo.

▣

The Lake Estes loop

A 3.75-mile paved circuit round the lake, listed by Visit Estes Park as easy, mostly flat and accessible. Bikes can be rented at the Lake Estes Marina or brought along.

▣

The Alpine stretch of Trail Ridge Road

Eleven miles above the treeline, where the landscape stops looking like anywhere children have been before. Short walks from the pull-offs are enough; the altitude makes anything longer harder than it looks.

▣

Ed's Cantina, late

Open until 9:00 p.m. every day, which matters when a family comes off the high road later than planned and most of the town has closed.
