What to Know Before You Arrive
The Colorado Springs Company laid out a settlement here in 1871 called Fountain Colony, renamed Colorado Springs the same year, and incorporated it on June 19, 1886. It has since grown outward more than any other municipality in the state: 195.8 square miles of total area, the largest of any city in Colorado. That sprawl is why the drives inside the city line are longer than the map suggests, and why the Front Range is a backdrop from almost everywhere in it. The city sits at roughly 6,000 feet — its own reference sources disagree on the exact figure by about twenty-four feet.
The mountain west of town is the reason most people have heard a Colorado Springs fact without knowing it. Katharine Lee Bates came to Colorado to teach a summer course in 1893, went up Pikes Peak, and wrote “America the Beautiful” after seeing the view from the summit that July. The summit height itself is in the same quiet argument Denver is having on its Capitol steps: the long-quoted figure is 14,115 feet, while the newer national datum puts it at 14,107. Neither number is a correction of a mistake. They are answers to the same question asked with different instruments.
Garden of the Gods is a National Natural Landmark, and the fins are sandstone tilted on end by the same uplift that raised the range behind them. The park is run as a public-private partnership between the city's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services department, the Visitor and Nature Center, and the Garden of the Gods Foundation — an arrangement that exists precisely because the entrance cannot be charged for. The money has to come from somewhere other than the gate.
The Road Trip Stop
Garden of the Gods is the anchor, and entry to both the park and the Visitor and Nature Center is free. It is a city park rather than a state or national one, which is why there is no pass to buy and no booth to stop at. The constraint is not money, it is parking.
Budget the time, and plan the parking
- The park opens early and closes late. Gates run 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. from November 1 through April 30, and 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. from May 1 through October 31. Early morning is the only time the main loop is reliably quiet in summer.
- The Visitor and Nature Center opens daily at 9:00 a.m. — to 5:00 p.m. in winter, and to 6:00 p.m. between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. It closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. We were unable to confirm the summer closing time: the park-information and contact pages list 6:00 p.m., while the banner at the top of every page shows 5:00 p.m. without naming a season. The center's own number, 719-634-6666, answers it.
- There is a free summer shuttle. The interior lots fill first and earliest on summer weekends, and the shuttle is the way around that without circling the loop.
- The address is 1805 N. 30th Street, and the Visitor and Nature Center number is 719-634-6666. The centre sits across the road from the park itself, so the first stop and the rocks are two separate parking decisions.

Neighborhoods
Downtown
A grid of streets around Tejon Street, with the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum in the former El Paso County courthouse at 215 S. Tejon St. The street grid runs true north here, with Pikes Peak closing the view west down most cross streets.
Old Colorado City
A separate town before the city annexed it in 1917. The Colorado Encyclopedia says it was named an unofficial capital of Colorado Territory in 1861, although the territorial legislature held a single session there before relocating to Denver in 1862. Its historic commercial district runs along the north side of Colorado Avenue from 24th Street to 2611 Colorado Avenue and holds 27 properties in Queen Anne, Italianate and Romanesque Revival styles; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 2, 1982.
The Westside
Westside is one of nine neighborhoods that the city's Greater Westside Community Plan lists to the west and south of downtown Colorado Springs, alongside Gold Hill, Ivywild, Mesa, Mesa Springs, Midland, Old Colorado City, Skyway and Stratton Meadows.
Broadmoor and Cheyenne Cañon
South-west of downtown, at the base of Cheyenne Mountain, where the Broadmoor resort sits; the reference entry for the resort gives its elevation as 6,230 feet. North Cheyenne Cañon Park is on the southwest side of the city, and the city's trail descriptions give the Columbine trail's lower, middle and upper trailheads as 6,250, 6,500 and 7,300 feet.
The Food Stop
The Airplane Restaurant at 1665 Newport Road is built around a fully intact Boeing KC-97 tanker that was constructed in 1953 and used for mid-air refuelling before it was grounded; the dining room runs through the fuselage, and the cockpit is open to walk into. The restaurant took the aircraft on in May 2002. Hours are 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday, closed Thanksgiving, with reduced hours around Christmas and New Year. It sits east of downtown near the airport rather than on the Garden side of the city, so it is a separate trip, not a stop on the way.

Pioneer League (baseball)The Rocky Mountain Vibes played their last game in Colorado Springs on September 5, 2025, and the Pioneer League's president confirmed that the team would not play in 2026.
Air Force Falcons
NCAA Division IThe academy is in Colorado Springs, with its North Gate at I-25 exit 156 and its South Gate at exit 150. The athletics site gives two different figures for Falcon Stadium's current capacity, 39,441 and 46,692. Access to the academy grounds is subject to security requirements that change: anyone without a DoW ID card needs a sponsored pass, visitors 18 and older must show REAL ID-compliant identification with it at the gate, and every request goes through a criminal background check, so confirm current visitor rules before driving in. The Hosmer Visitor Center just outside the North Gate needs no base access.
The major-league venues are in the Denver area: Coors Field (Rockies), Empower Field at Mile High (Broncos) and Ball Arena (Nuggets and Avalanche) are in Denver, and Dick's Sporting Goods Park (Rapids) is in Commerce City. Visit Colorado Springs places Colorado Springs 70 miles south of Denver on Interstate 25. The professional soccer side and the service-academy football programme listed above are the ones based inside the city.
Day Trips
| Destination | Time | Distance | How we got it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pikes Peak | 1 hr 10 min | 30 mi | routed |
| Two ways up, and they are genuinely different trips. The Pikes Peak Highway is a 19-mile toll road, fully paved since October 1, 2011, that climbs to the summit at 14,115 feet. The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway closed for rebuilding in 2017 and resumed running seven days a week on May 27, 2021 after more than three years out of service. The highway charges $18* a head for ages 16 and over, $8* for ages 6 to 15, or $65* for a carload of up to five, with a $2* timed-entry permit on top in summer. The mountain is open year-round, weather permitting, and the highway season runs May 1 to November 30. | |||
| Manitou Springs | 14 min | 7 mi | routed |
| A separate city with its own city hall, just west of Colorado Springs according to Visit Colorado Springs. Its public mineral springs are free and flow around the clock, and the town's visitor site counts eight of them. Visit Colorado Springs lists the Broadmoor and Manitou Pikes Peak Cog Railway and the Manitou Incline among the attractions in town. | |||
| Cripple Creek | 1 hr 15 min | 45 mi | routed |
| A gold-rush town on the western side of Pikes Peak that turned to legal gambling in 1991. The drive is the reason to go as much as the town. | |||
| Cañon City and the Royal Gorge | 1 hr 5 min | 47 mi | routed |
| A gorge with granite walls near Cañon City, crossed by the Royal Gorge Bridge, which its operator describes as suspended 956 feet over the Arkansas River, with the Royal Gorge Route Railroad running through the gorge beside the river. The bridge’s directions page says to head south on I-25 from Colorado Springs and take exit 140. The bridge and the railroad are separate operations, each with its own website and booking. | |||
| Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument | 56 min | 37 mi | routed |
| Petrified redwood stumps up to 14 feet wide and thousands of detailed insect and plant fossils, in a mountain valley 35 miles west of Colorado Springs. It is a National Park Service site, so entry rules and fees follow federal policy rather than the city's: $10* per adult age 16 or older, with visitors ages 15 and under admitted free. | |||
Routed figures are computed over map data at free-flowing speeds, between map points rather than street addresses, so a real drive runs longer.

Practical Road Trip Info
One day covers the Garden and downtown. Pikes Peak is its own day, whichever way you go up, and the gorge or Cripple Creek is a third.
The altitude stacks. The city is at about 6,000 feet and the summit is over 14,000, so the mountain day asks for more acclimatisation than the city does. Weather at the top is a different season from the weather at the bottom on the same afternoon.
Garden parking is the bottleneck, not the entry. Entry is free and the lots are not large; the free summer shuttle and an early start are the two ways around it.
I-25 runs the length of the city, and because Colorado Springs covers more ground than any other municipality in Colorado, crossing from the Garden side to the airport side is a real drive rather than a hop.
7 public campgrounds within 25 miles of Colorado Springs, all bookable ahead. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
The free summer shuttle at the Garden
It removes the circling-for-a-space part of the visit, which is the part that goes badly with tired children in the back.
The cockpit at the Airplane Restaurant
Children can sit in the flight deck of a 1953 KC-97 before or after eating, which is a rare thing to be allowed to touch.
Helen Hunt Falls
A waterfall in North Cheyenne Cañon Park. The city's visitor guide says visitors can enjoy the view from the base of the falls or take a short walk to the top and the bridge across the falls.
Manitou Springs' public fountains
The public mineral springs around Manitou Springs are free and flow around the clock, according to the town's chamber of commerce and visitors bureau, which says each of the eight springs has its own unique taste and offers a self-guided tour.
