Durango

The town was organised by a railroad that needed somewhere to start from, named by an ex-governor after a city in Mexico he had liked, and the line it was built to run still goes to the same mining town on the same three-foot track.

What to Know Before You Arrive

The railroad is not an attraction bolted onto the town; it is the reason there is a town. William Jackson Palmer's Denver and Rio Grande laid Durango out through the Durango Trust to sell the lots, and the whole exercise existed to get ore out of the San Juans. The same Palmer had founded Colorado Springs on the other side of the state, which means two of Colorado's distinctive towns were drawn up by the same railway man for the same reason.

The line to Silverton opened in 1882, the Denver and Rio Grande having reached the mining town on July 10 of that year, and it runs on 3-foot narrow gauge. It follows the Animas River into the narrow Animas Canyon, between steep granite walls, for 45.2 miles. It is a National Historic Landmark District, designated July 4, 1961, listed on the National Register in 1966, and named a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1968. Its own reference entry says the line has run continuously since 1881, while also recording that narrow-gauge operations ended on October 5, 1980 and the present railroad was formed after acquiring the line in March 1981 — the two statements sit side by side without being reconciled, so “continuous” is a claim to treat carefully.

One thing has changed, and it is the thing a visitor is most likely to assume has not. The locomotives are steam, but they are no longer coal. The railroad's own site describes the trip as travelling “by an oil-fired, steam-powered locomotive or historic diesel locomotive.” Coal-burning engines were suspected of sparking the 416 Fire in June 2018, and the owner planned to spend several million dollars replacing coal firing with oil because of the wildfire risk. The railroad's FAQ now states that all of its steam locomotives have been converted to oil-burning as of 2024.

The Road Trip Stop

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is the anchor, and it is the stop that most changes the shape of a day: 45.2 miles each way up the Animas Canyon on three-foot track, to a mining town at the top. This is not a short ride between other plans. The round trip is the plan.

Book it, and give it the day

  • Treat it as a full day, not an excursion. The route is 45.2 miles in each direction through the canyon. We were unable to confirm the current timetable, journey time or fares for this season — those are on the railroad's own site and change by season and by service.
  • Know what you are riding behind. The railroad describes its trains as hauled by an oil-fired steam locomotive or a historic diesel. Steam is not guaranteed on every departure, so if that is the point of the trip, confirm the motive power for your date before booking.
  • The canyon is the attraction, not the destination. The line follows the Animas River into a narrow gorge with steep granite walls. The views are on both sides at different points, which is worth knowing before choosing a seat.
  • There is a road alternative, and it is not equivalent. US 550 north of Durango — the Million Dollar Highway, part of the San Juan Skyway — also reaches Silverton. It is a mountain road with its own winter closures and its own reputation, and it is a very different trip from a seat on a train.

Neighborhoods

Main Avenue
The historic downtown spine, with the Strater Hotel on it and the railroad depot at the lower end, so the two things the town is known for sit on the same street.

The Animas River corridor
The Animas River runs right through the heart of downtown Durango, per the Durango tourism office, with a trail alongside it; the city calls the Animas River Trail a recreational trail and an important component of its transportation network. In early summer it carries serious snowmelt.

The Fort Lewis College mesa
The college sits on a 247-acre mesa overlooking Durango and the San Juan Mountains, in its own description, and its history page says it serves thousands of students every year.

North Main and the 550 corridor
The City of Durango's 2018 character district plan describes the North Main corridor as running from the Highway 550/160 intersection up to the northern city limits, and lists current land uses there that include motels, restaurants, retail and commercial uses; it also says many of the mid-century motels on North Main date to the tourism boom of the 1950s.

Hidden Gems

▣

The railroad's own yard and museum

The yard at the Durango end is a working one: the railroad's FAQ says its diesel locomotives are used for daily train switching once the steam locomotives return for the night, and the railroad runs a guided Behind The Scenes Tour of the yard, machine shop, roundhouse, car shop, rolling stock and museum three times a day from May to October, at $20* for ages 12 and up and $12* for ages 6 to 11. The museum is at the south end of the roundhouse, admission is free, and it is open daily in the summer (May to October) and on dates the Cascade Canyon winter train runs.

▣

The Animas River Trail

A hard-surface shared-use path along the river that the City of Durango says stretches nearly 7 miles through the Animas River Greenway and links the north, downtown and southern sections of the community.

▣

Chimney Rock National Monument

An Ancestral Puebloan site east of Durango where, in the Northern Major Lunar Standstill that recurs every 18.6 years, the Forest Service says the moon aligns between the two sandstone spires, Chimney Rock and Companion Rock, with that moonrise not to be seen again until 2044. The monument is open May 15 through October 15, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and road access to the upper mesa closes at 3:15 daily; self-guided visits are included with the vehicle activity pass ($20*, or $10* for a motorcycle), and a guided Great House tour runs on each day the monument is open.

▣

The Diamond Belle Saloon

Inside the Strater Hotel at 699 Main Avenue, one of the hotel's three drinking and dining rooms alongside the Mahogany Grille and the Office Spiritorium. The hotel does not post hours on its front page; they sit on a separate menus page.

07

The Food Stop

The Strater Hotel at 699 Main Avenue has been hosting gatherings in Durango since 1887 and still runs as an 88-room hotel with three of the town's long-standing rooms inside it: the Diamond Belle Saloon, the Mahogany Grille and the Office Spiritorium, the last of which hosts live music. It sits on the same street as the railroad depot, which is the practical reason it works for a train day. We were unable to confirm the current opening hours for any of the three — the hotel keeps them on a separate menus-and-hours page rather than its front page, so check there before planning an evening around one. The telephone number is 800-247-4431.

The Home Teams

Fort Lewis Skyhawks

NCAA Division II
Fort Lewis College · on the mesa above town

Fort Lewis College's Skyhawks compete in NCAA Division II as members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Home games are on campus: football and women's lacrosse at Ray Dennison Memorial Field, soccer at Dirks Field, softball at Aspen Field, and basketball and volleyball in Whalen Gymnasium. The athletics site calls Aspen Field “one of the prettiest ball parks in the country”, with views overlooking the city of Durango.

The team to follow in Durango is Fort Lewis College's Skyhawks, covered above. This is one of the more genuinely remote stops on the route — there is no interstate close by, and US 160 and US 550 are the roads that serve it.

Silverton by the Million Dollar Highway58 min48 mirouted
US 550 north, part of the San Juan Skyway, climbing over Coal Bank and Molas passes to the same town the train serves; the Colorado Department of Transportation applies the “Million Dollar Highway” name to the segment between Ouray and Silverton, beyond that town. Winter conditions close or restrict it: CDOT says snow conditions may require safety closures at any time on many southwest Colorado highways, and has warned that Coal Bank and Molas passes may require them.

East on US 160, about 60 miles from Durango, a town with hot springs properties and the San Juan River flowing through its centre, with the Chimney Rock turn-off on the way.
Ouray2 hr 5 min80 mirouted
At the other end of the Million Dollar Highway from Silverton: the Colorado Department of Transportation says the segment from Ouray to Silverton is called the Million Dollar Highway, and the town's own Visit Ouray site describes Ouray as sitting at 7,800 feet above sea level, surrounded by 12,000- to 13,000-foot peaks. The San Juan Skyway it belongs to is listed at 236 miles in total.

Practical Road Trip Info

Durango is remote, and the mileage understates it. There is no interstate nearby; US 160 and US 550 are mountain highways, and winter weather governs both. Plan arrival times generously.

The train is the day. A Silverton round trip is 45.2 miles each way. Trying to fit Mesa Verde into the same day is how people end up doing neither properly.

The town is at 6,532 feet and the passes north go far higher. The Million Dollar Highway crosses several of them, which matters for anyone who has driven up from the desert that morning.

Book ahead in summer. The railroad says to reserve early for best availability on any excursion, Mesa Verde's ranger-led cliff dwelling tours require a reservation that the park says fills up early, and Chimney Rock takes reservations for its guided tour while general entry is first-come, first served.

11 public campgrounds within 25 miles of Durango, 10 of them bookable ahead. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.

The Local Debate

14

Family-Friendly

▣

The railroad yard at Durango

The railroad museum at the south end of the roundhouse in Durango has steam locomotives and railroad cars dating back to the 1880s that can be seen up close, and the museum's page says visitors can explore the cab of a locomotive; the guided yard tour takes ages 6 and up.

▣

The Animas River Trail

A hard-surface shared-use path beside the Animas River that the city says stretches nearly 7 miles and gives easy access to parks, the community recreation center, the public library and downtown, which gives a way across town on a day when nobody wants another drive.

▣

A shorter train option

The full Silverton round trip is a long day for small children at 45.2 miles each way. The railroad lists shorter options in its 2026 schedule: the Silverton Express, a 5.5-hour excursion that goes up by motorcoach and returns by train, which the railroad describes as suited to families with young children (listed through October 11), and the Cascade Canyon Winter Train, a 5.25-hour round trip of 26 miles each way on select dates from November 20 through April 30. Check the railroad's site for which are operating on your dates.

▣

Mesa Verde's accessible overlooks

Many cliff dwellings can be seen from viewpoints and overlooks along Mesa Top Loop and Cliff Palace Loop, including Cliff Palace and Square Tower House, without joining a tour. The Cliff Palace tour involves four ladders, and the National Park Service says all persons, including children, must be capable of climbing the ladders on their own. That is the version that works for a family with mixed ages.
