What to Know Before You Arrive
The city was founded in 1847 by settlers led by Brigham Young and was originally called Great Salt Lake City; the word “Great” was dropped in 1868. The settlement was laid out as a grid from the start, which is why the street pattern is so regular and why the numbering works the way it does. Most American cities grew and were then organised. This one was organised and then grew.
The 2002 Winter Olympics are the other date the city measures itself by. Salt Lake City was selected in 1995 to host them, and the record is not uncomplicated — the games “were plagued with controversy,” including a bid scandal that surfaced in 1998. The venues from that year are still in use in the mountains around the city, which is a more durable legacy than the headlines.
The lake the city is named for is in serious difficulty. Drought and water diversion have taken the Great Salt Lake to record-low levels, and the problem is not only scenic: the receding lake has exposed arsenic which may become airborne, subjecting people in the area to poisonous dust. A visitor should know that the lake is a live environmental emergency rather than a photograph, and that what is visible from the shore now is a long way from what the maps show.
The Road Trip Stop
Temple Square is the anchor, and it is free and open to the public, 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily, including during the current renovation. It is also the origin of the street grid, so standing at its south-east corner puts you at the zero point of every address in the valley.
Free to walk, ticketed to go inside
- The grounds cost nothing and open early and late. Seven in the morning to ten at night is a wider window than almost any other anchor in this guide, which makes it workable either side of a driving day.
- The Salt Lake Temple is under renovation, with the work framed around a Salt Lake Temple Celebration in 2027. Temple tours run on timed-entry tickets, and the recommendation is to book at least two weeks ahead through the Temple Square app or online. A walk-up visit on the day is not the plan here.
- The Sunday broadcast is open to the public. The Tabernacle Choir's live broadcast, Music and the Spoken Word, is performed at the Salt Lake Tabernacle. The choir's site lists admission as free for guests ages 8 and older, with doors opening at 8:15 a.m. and the 30-minute broadcast ending at 10:00 a.m., and offers free ticket reservations through its website or the Temple Square app. Its broadcast page states that tickets are required to attend, while its ticketing page describes a standby line with limited capacity for visitors without a reservation, so check the choir's ticketing page for the current arrangements before counting on it.
- This is a working religious site, not a municipal park. The visitors' centre presents the faith's own account of itself, and visitors are guests on private grounds held open to the public.

Neighborhoods
Temple Square and downtown
The grid's origin block and the compact centre around it, where the numbered streets start counting outward.
The Avenues
On the hill rising from downtown, an older residential district that the city’s own page calls Salt Lake City’s first neighborhood, dating to the 1850s and named for its grid of avenues and streets.
North Temple and the west side
The axis street running west from the Square toward the airport, with a different and older commercial character along it.
Sugar House
A district that the city’s own page says represents the village nature of neighborhoods that existed before the predominance of the automobile, and which Visit Salt Lake calls “eminently strollable.”
The Food Stop
Red Iguana has been run by the Cardenas family for more than four decades, with the original at 736 W North Temple Street — on the grid's own west axis — and a second at 866 W South Temple Street. Its own site puts the matter simply: “Red Iguana is famous for our moles,” and lists eight of them, including negro, amarillo, poblano, verde, coloradito, red pipian, mango and almendras, with a sampler if you cannot choose. Both city locations run 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It is consistently busy; the second location exists because the first one could not keep up.

Day Trips
| Destination | Time | Distance | How we got it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Antelope Island State Park | 1 hr 5 min | 46 mi | routed |
| North on a narrow two-lane causeway into the Great Salt Lake, to an island with a free-ranging bison herd and, in the park’s words, spectacular views of lake and island scenery. The park’s fee page lists a standard entrance fee of $15* per vehicle of up to 8 people and refers to a separate $2* Davis County Causeway fee. | |||
| Park Cityguide | 44 min | 33 mi | routed |
| East on I-80, which the state tourism office describes as connecting Salt Lake City to Park City, to a town that Visit Park City calls “more than a ski town” and says was shaped by silver mining roots. The Sundance Film Festival, which Visit Park City’s FAQ lists among the town’s major events, shows its 2027 festival on its own site as taking place in Boulder, Colorado. | |||
| Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons | 45 min | 25 mi | estimated |
| Into the Wasatch, two canyons with four ski resorts between them — Alta and Snowbird in Little Cottonwood, Brighton and Solitude in Big Cottonwood — and, in Little Cottonwood, hiking in summer as well as skiing in winter, according to Visit Salt Lake. Visit Salt Lake puts Little Cottonwood Canyon 25 miles from downtown and gives 28 to 31 miles for the four resorts. Winter traction laws apply: UDOT states that traction devices are required during severe winter weather conditions on roads throughout Utah, including Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons, and places enforcement and turnaround checkpoints at the canyon entrances. | |||
| Bonneville Salt Flats | 1 hr 55 min | 120 mi | routed |
| West on I-80, which the BLM’s directions leave at Exit 4 near Wendover, Utah, for the salt flats — racing grounds for land speed racers since 1914, according to the BLM. The BLM says the flats are generally open to the public, but motor vehicle use is limited by seasonal closure in spring when the salt is moist or has standing water on the surface, with closure dates posted by sign, and general access is temporarily closed during permitted racing and private events. | |||
| Timpanogos Cave National Monumentguide | 44 min | 35 mi | routed |
| In American Fork Canyon, which the National Park Service places approximately 40 miles south of Salt Lake City, reached by a steep mile-and-a-half hike to the cave entrance. Tours are ticketed, with tickets sold through Recreation.gov up to 30 days ahead, and the park describes the tour season as typically running from May or June through September or October. | |||

*Check before you go. Every lake here links to the official page we checked it against. Each states a price we read off that page on the date we checked. Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.

Practical Road Trip Info
Learn the grid first. Addresses are distances from the south-east corner of Temple Square; once that clicks, finding anything in the valley becomes arithmetic rather than navigation.
Two interstates cross here, which makes Salt Lake City one of the easiest major stops in the Mountain West to reach from any direction.
Altitude and dryness. The valley floor sits above 4,300 feet and the canyons climb steeply from it.
Winter means canyon traction laws. When the beacons outside the canyons are flashing, vehicles in Big or Little Cottonwood Canyon are required to have at least 5/32 inch of tread, with M+S or snow tyres on all wheels for AWD and 4WD vehicles and 3PMSF snow tyres on all wheels for 2WD vehicles; chains and other traction devices are also accepted. UDOT places enforcement and turnaround checkpoints at the canyon entrances, while also noting that law enforcement cannot guarantee strict enforcement at all times.
One public campground within 25 miles of Salt Lake City, and it takes reservations. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
Working out the grid
Turning the address system into a game — “how far are we from the corner?” — gives children something to do in the car that actually teaches the city.
The bison on Antelope Island
A free-ranging herd that the state park describes as one of the nation’s largest and oldest public bison herds, reachable by car along a narrow two-lane causeway.
Temple Square grounds
Open and free from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. with room to walk and statuary to look at, and no ticket needed.
A Bees game
Triple-A baseball at The Ballpark at America First Square in Daybreak, South Jordan; the club’s own FAQ describes a Tuesday-night Family Night with four tickets for $40* and each additional ticket, up to 8, at $10*.
