Springdale (Zion)

A town of 514 people at the edge of one of America's busiest national parks, where the main scenic drive is closed to your car for most of the year and the way in is a free bus.

What to Know Before You Arrive

Springdale was settled in 1862 as a Mormon farming community by people evacuating the flooding of nearby Northrop, and it sits directly against the park boundary. It functions as Zion's gateway community: 514 people providing the lodging, parking and transport for a park that receives visitors in the millions. The imbalance is the defining fact of the place, and it is why the arrangements here are more structured than at most parks.

The central thing to understand before arriving is that Zion Canyon is a bus corridor, not a drive. During the shuttle season the Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles, with an exception only for guests of Zion Lodge and Canyon Trail Rides who hold reservations and are issued passes or codes. Private cars can drive the Scenic Drive in the non-shuttle season, usually December through February. Other park roads stay open to cars all year: the Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway, Kolob Terrace Road and the Kolob Canyons Scenic Drive.

There are two separate free shuttle lines and they are not the same service. The Zion Canyon Line runs inside the park from the Visitor Center up the canyon. The Springdale Line runs nine stops through the town, from Hotel De Novo at Stop 9 to Zion Canyon Village at Stop 1 beside the park's pedestrian entrance, roughly every ten to fifteen minutes. You connect between them on foot, by walking across the footbridge to the Visitor Center, and you pay the park entrance fee at the pedestrian entrance after getting off at Stop 1.

03

The Road Trip Stop

Zion Canyon by shuttle is the anchor, and it is free: “Shuttles are free to ride” and “You do not need a permit, ticket, or reservation to use the shuttle system.” What it costs instead is planning, because the timetable changes through the year and the last bus is earlier than people expect.

Learn the timetable, then the stops

  • Know the day's last bus before you start walking. From 13 September to 24 October the canyon line runs first at 7:00 a.m., last from the Visitor Center at 6:00 p.m. and last out of the canyon at 7:15 p.m.; from 25 October to 28 November that becomes 7:00 a.m., 5:00 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. The park's own advice is blunt: “You should not wait for the last shuttle of the day.”
  • There is a winter gap. No canyon or town shuttle service runs from 29 November to 25 December; a holiday service resumes 26 December to 2 January, starting at 8:00 a.m. In that gap, and usually through February, you drive the Scenic Drive yourself.
  • Boarding is not symmetrical. You can get on or off at any open stop, but heading up-canyon you cannot board at Canyon Junction (Stop 3) or the Human History Museum (Stop 2), and everyone must get off at the Temple of Sinawava (Stop 9) and at the Visitor Center (Stop 1).
  • Park in town and ride in. Springdale parking is paid and run by the town or local businesses, and the Springdale Line connects it to the pedestrian entrance. Bicycles travel on the front rack, though not e-bikes or fat-tyre bikes, and only service animals may ride. We were unable to confirm the current park entrance fee.

Neighborhoods

Zion Park Boulevard
UT-9 through the town is Zion Park Boulevard, and the Utah Department of Transportation describes Springdale as offering a range of lodging, dining and outfitting options catering to park visitors. The park's South Entrance and Pedestrian Entrance are on the north end of town.

The pedestrian entrance
At Zion Canyon Village, Stop 1 on the town line, where the footbridge crosses to the Visitor Center. This is the actual front door for most visitors.

Rockville
The smaller settlement, which the Utah Department of Transportation places 5 miles west of the South Entrance and describes as having “a quieter, more laid-back atmosphere”. The town gives its population as 274, and its 1924 single-lane truss bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The canyon walls
The Utah Department of Transportation describes Springdale as dominated by towering canyon walls that rise dramatically around it, and the town describes itself as tucked beneath stunning red cliffs.

Hidden Gems

▣

The Kolob Canyons section

A separate entrance to Zion off I-15 well north of Springdale, with its own scenic drive that stays open to private vehicles year-round. It is the part of the park most visitors never see.

▣

Kolob Terrace Road

A back road that begins in the town of Virgin, 13.5 miles west of the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, and is open to cars throughout the shuttle season. Seasonal at the top: the park says it usually closes for several months from fall to spring because of snow.

▣

The Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway

The road east over the park through the 1930 tunnel, open to private vehicles all year. Large vehicles need an escort through the tunnel; check the restrictions before driving it.

▣

The winter canyon

From roughly December to February the Scenic Drive reopens to cars. It is the only time of year you can stop where you like in the main canyon.

07

The Food Stop

Springdale's eating runs along Zion Park Boulevard within a few hundred yards of the shuttle stops, which is convenient but also means it absorbs the whole park's dinner trade into a town of 514 people. We were unable to confirm a specific long-standing Springdale restaurant for this guide, and this guide does not name a business without checking that business's own site. The practical advice that does hold: eat early or late rather than at the hour the last canyon shuttle arrives, because everyone comes out of the park at once.

One brewpub within 10 miles of Springdale (Zion). In a small town that is often the kitchen still serving when everywhere else has stopped.

*Check before you go. This list says what the source records as open and where it is — nothing more. Opening hours, whether a kitchen is serving, and whether anywhere suits your family are not in this data and change without notice. A production site may have no public room at all. Please confirm with the venue.

08

The Home Teams

No MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL or MLS team plays anywhere near Springdale, which at 514 residents is among the smallest places on this route. The park's directions page lists Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas as 170 miles away, and Las Vegas is home to the NFL's Raiders.

Practical Road Trip Info

Plan around the shuttle, not the car. In season the canyon is only reachable by bus, and the timetable is the day's real constraint.

Park in Springdale and walk in. Town parking is paid and the town line runs every ten to fifteen minutes to the pedestrian entrance, which avoids the park's own car park filling early.

The desert heat is serious and the canyon amplifies it. Summer afternoons on exposed rock at the bottom of a canyon are hotter than the forecast suggests; carry far more water than feels necessary.

Winter is the quiet exception. With the shuttle paused and the Scenic Drive open to cars, roughly December to February is a completely different, and much emptier, park.

2 public campgrounds within 25 miles of Springdale (Zion), all bookable ahead. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.

13

The Local Debate

14

Family-Friendly

▣

Riding the shuttle itself

A free bus with commentary that children can get on and off repeatedly is a lower-stress way through a park than a car and a car park.

▣

The Riverside Walk

A mile of concrete path along the Virgin River from the Temple of Sinawava, the last shuttle stop. The Park Service records the surface as entirely concrete and the first half-mile as mostly flat, though the paving is irregular in places and the steepest pitch reaches about 26 per cent, so it is easier going than a trail but not level throughout.

▣

The Human History Museum

A shuttle stop with indoor exhibits and a 22-minute orientation film, open only from spring to fall, with the park's hours page listing 10 am–5 pm. Note you cannot board here heading up-canyon.

▣

The town footbridge

Walking into a national park across a bridge rather than driving through a gate is a better arrival for children than a queue of cars.
